Gaur was the capital of Bangla for several years. Hence, a lot of infrastructures were built in this region. Many Mosques, Madrasa and other building were constructed during the sultanate n and Mughal period too. Choto Sona Mosque is one of them.
Choto Sona Mosque, a unique symbole of muslim architecture is located at a distance of 36KM north of Chapai Nawabgonj district town, in Village-Pirozpur, Union- Shabajpur and Upazila- Shibganj. This is a rectangular building measuring 26x16m. The Mosque is built by thin bricks and ornamental stones cover surface of the wall. There are 11arched entrances including five on the east and three on both north and south. As many as five highly ornate black stone mihrabs decorate the western wall of the prayer chamber. In the north-west corner, there is a provision for prayer for women, built on the pillar, which is popularly known as “Genana Mahal” or “Ladies Gallery”.
There are four octagonal minars or turrets on the four corners of the Mosque and twelve half rounded and three chauchala domes on the roof. The domes were once gilded, hence this is known as “Golden Mosque” it is called “Small Golden Mosque” since it is smaller than the “Large Golden Mosque” situated in the Gaur (India).
The outer face of the wall of the Mosque specially the front wall is decorated with Flower, Hanging Chain, Bell and Geometric design like those of terracotta plaques. Floor of the Mosque and courtyard were originally covered with beautiful glazed tiles decorated with highly artistic floral and geometric patterns. In terms of architectural beauty and aestheticism, this Mosque is regarded as the Gem of Gaur. On the eastern side of the Mosque, there is a stone gateway with pointed arches. Over the central entrance there is a stone inscription Arabic, which records shown that the Mosque was constructed by Wali Muhammad between 1493 and 1519 A.D during the reign of Sultan Hossain Shah.
